Wei Yang and Murphy Janssen: now you are there when this happened
In December 2023, Jack Straw and Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences (AVIA) presented an accessible youth and family art workshop at Jack Straw in conjunction with Wei Yang and Murphy Janssen’s New Media Gallery installation, now you are there when this happened.
After an audio description of the installation and gallery space from Jesse Minkert of Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences, participants explored Wei and Janssen’s work and recorded an improvised performance using the instruments in the installation. The group then created short musical themes in Jack Straw’s recording studios with engineer Daniel Guenther and production intern Erin Shellman. After recording their new musical ideas using Wei’s ambisonic microphone, the group explored the possibilities of manipulating the recordings into a new composition using SuperCollider, the software used to create now you are there when this happened.
