Roger Feldman and Jeff Roberts: The New Landscape: Reconstructed Ecologies
In June 2017, Jack Straw and Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences (AVIA) presented an accessible art workshop at Jack Straw in conjunction with the installation The New Landscape: Reconstructed Ecologies by sculptor Roger Feldman and sound artist Jeff Roberts, which incorporated large-scale sculpture, sound design, and interactive software to transport the visitor to the sonic and spatial worlds of contrasting environments in two different locations on the North American continent.
After Jeff and Roger walked everyone through the installation and demonstrated how it worked, Roger showed the workshop participants how he used foamboard and glue to make maquettes, or small scale models, for planning large sculptural pieces, and the group made their own maquettes.
Next, Jeff showed the group some of his studio-created environmental sounds, and they worked with Jack Straw’s teaching artists to record their own handmade sound effects and spoken text in the studio. The new audio was then incorporated into the installation for everyone to hear.
