E.T. Russian: CASTING SHADOWS
In the fall of 2016, Jack Straw and Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences (AVIA) presented an accessible art workshop at Jack Straw in conjunction with ET Russian’s New Media Gallery installation CASTING SHADOWS, which incorporated elements of comic art, personal narrative, and field recording to envelop the viewer/listener in “a wash of story.”
ET brought the students into the gallery to show them the installation and explained the process behind its development – which involved many hours of drawing, recording interviews and location sounds, and editing video and soundscapes. Then the students interviewed each other and created short sound pieces of their stories.
Students also learned from ET about the art of comics and used craft wax to create tactile comics to accompany their stories. Then they shared their audio, visual, and tactile art creations with each other.
