Joel S. Kollin | Vriti
April 17 – May 29, 2009
Vriti the Sanskrit word refers to the vortex or oscillations of the mind that lead to separation from Reality, Nature, or God. We constantly construct a false relationship with Reality; a separation from the world around us, being led blindly by the narration of our own thoughts. Thus, we ironically separate ourselves from the world by the same mental processes we use to engage with it.
Vriti the installation by Joel S. Kollin incorporates the audience as participants in an evolving complex feedback loop of light, sound, movement, and space as a metaphor for this: we cannot separate ourselves from our perceptions, and the action of perception inevitably has consequences that we can never be fully aware of.
