Art & Heritage Partnerships
The Gritos del Alma project was initiated in 1992, in collaboration with the Washington State Arts Commission and Radio KDNA, to recognize and honor the diverse traditions of the people of Mexican descent who reside in Washington State. The project began with a survey of folk arts in the Yakima area. It was quickly discovered that within a 50-mile radius of Yakima there was a wealth of traditional culture. A variety of music genres was recorded at a concert in Granger in October 1993. Fieldwork was conducted by Craig Miller, Cathy Ragland, Willie Smyth, Linda O’Hagan, and Joan Rabinowitz.
The resulting 23-page bilingual booklet and 60-minute cassette provide an excellent introduction to the Chicano/Mexicano music traditions of the Yakima Valley. The booklet covers the history of these traditions and focuses on the life and work of several contemporary practitioners of these art forms. The cassette includes the music and complete song lyrics of Trinidad Marquez, Roberto Rangel y Revancha, Los Capesinos de Michoacan, Mariachi Guanajuato, Los Astros del Norte and Los Campos.
