From Composer to Performance
A Jack Straw radio series on the process of putting together a contemporary chamber piece
From Composer to Performance was a series of documentaries on the process of putting together a contemporary chamber piece that launched in 1989 via the NPR satellite. The series developed out of “Performa 87,” a Seattle-area festival that commissioned dozens of new works in music, theater and dance.
The producer Joan Robinowitz, who was awarded National Federation of Community Broadcasters 1990 Community Radio Award for the series, recorded rehearsals and talked with composers, musicians and event heir family members for the five-segment, half hour show. Over the years, the show featured composers such as George Perle, Paul Chihara and William O. Smith, and members of the Seattle Symphony.
