Ellen Sollod and Dan Hawkins | The Great Basin: Two Views
November 3, 2017 – February 28, 2018
Jack Straw Atrium Gallery
This photographic exhibition – investigating the landscape of the Great Basin stretching from SE Oregon to Nevada, Utah and Southern California – endeavors to reveal the changing geology, man’s impact on this landscape and how climate change is affecting the area. Sollod’s work was made during a residency at Playa in Summer Lake, Oregon, while Hawkins’s resulted from multiple personal forays into the landscape.
Using anachronistic technology (medium and large format film, pinhole and large format cameras) and analog methods of processing (including using water from the site to dramatically affect the image), the artists’ working methods are integral to the outcome. Analog photography methods are direct, time-based, and present explicit evidence of not just the photographer’s eye but also his/her hand. They represent a very personal response to this dramatic landscape.
