chamber music, presented at Jack Straw New Media Gallery in conjunction with Steve Roden’s exhibit the surface of the moon at Suyama Space, consists of three related works – a series of drawings, a silent animated film, and a sound installation. The works were collectively inspired by the work of amateur meteorologist Luke Howard, who created the names of cloud forms in the early 1800s. All of the works were built using 26 different circular resonant objects or audible surfaces. In the sound installation they were recorded, and in some cases electronically transformed for the creation of a quiet audioscape. For the drawings and film, they were traced with ink to compose still or moving abstract clusters and images.

In all the works these seemingly random arrangements of sound, line, and movement were ‘composed’ using to self made systems equating each object to a letter of the alphabet – with all artworks finally existing as visible or audible ‘translations’ of texts related to Howard’s work with clouds.
