Immigration Stories
Working with students at schools with international populations to create radio pieces documenting the immigration experiences of students and staff.
Students at schools with international populations work with Jack Straw teaching artists at their school and in the Jack Straw studios to create radio pieces documenting the immigration experiences of students and staff.
Students interview each other and staff about why they came to the US, what they left behind, and how their lives have changed. Jack Straw’s artist team trains the students to conduct interviews and helps them write questions that will bring out the interviewees’ individual stories. Jack Straw engineers then work with the students to record their interviews.
After the interviews are recorded, students work with our teaching artists to select highlights from the interviews and write their narration. Our voice coaches coach the students in reading their narration out loud, providing the students with both language and performance support. Our engineers then join the students and voice coaches to record their narration – either in the Jack Straw studios or at the school. Interview segments and narration are then edited and mixed in the Jack Straw studios to create the final audio stories.
