Jack Straw New Media Gallery

Joel Kollin is a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington’s Digital Art and Experimental Media (DXARTS) program, where he is developing an artistic agenda which utilizes immersion and perception at the extremes of sensory awareness to examine the interplay between identity, memory, surveillance, and empathy in an increasingly dissociative, media-centric world. His recent interests include fully immersive installations, environmental sound, synthaesthesia, and systems art where humans form a critical part in a network of complex emergent behavior. Prior to arriving at DXARTS Mr Kollin worked primarily in the field of display technology for 17 years. He holds several key patents on personal, holographic, and autostereoscopic displays as well as many derivative patents.

Gust Burns composes performances of music. Drawing on his experience as a pianist, contemporary art practices, and 20th century composition, Burns’ works blur differentiations between performance, score, recording, and text.

Burns earned an MFA in music/sound from Bard College, and is a graduate student at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Artist Support Program 2007 : Recorded an album of structured improvisations for 10 musicians.

Melanie Noel is the author of The Monarchs, published by Stockport Flats in 2013. Her poems have appeared in Weekday, LVNG, La Norda Especialo, and THE ARCADIA PROJECT. She’s also written poems for short films and installations, and co-curated APOSTROPHE, a dance, music, and poetry series, with musician Gust Burns and dancers Michèle Steinwald and Beth Graczyk, and curated IMPALA, a reading series that took place in her grandmother’s car. She sometimes teaches experiential workshops meant to invoke synesthesia and an altered sense of scale. Melanie Noel grew up in Oregon and lives in Seattle, Washington.

Brent Watanabe programs computer applications to connect the gap between his interests in drawing, audio and video, mixing high tech tools with low-tech techniques. He works primarily in video, animation, and computer controlled installations. His short films have been screened at film festivals internationally, and his drawings, videos, and installations have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the US.
