We experience our world through senses that are only capable of interpreting the smallest fraction of sound and light waves. Some frequencies are captured by our eyes and translated by our brains to create images in color and shadow. Other frequencies combine to create great musical compositions when they stimulate our ear drums. What if our eyes could see those sounds, or our ears could hear the light?

Since relocating to the Pacific Northwest in 2012, artist Andy Behrle has been developing ways to visualize sound and make light audible while exploring ideas of place and location. For luminous soundscape, he has captured field recordings of the sounds of Seattle to re-interpret as textures and patterns in light. Colorful spotlights representing different sounds overlap and cascade across the space, filling the room with hypnotic pulses of light and the white noise of the city.
