Andy Behrle: luminous soundscape

In February 2016 Jack Straw and Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences (AVIA) presented a pair of accessible workshops at Jack Straw in conjunction with Andy Behrle’s New Media Gallery installation luminous soundscape, which incorporates sculpture, sound, light, and video.

AVIA director Jesse Minkert describes the installation for workshop participants

Over two consecutive weekends, sighted and visually impaired students and family members from Seattle and around the region participated in hands-on art and sound workshops with Andy and Jack Straw teaching artists. Andy brought the students into the gallery and introduced them to his installation. AVIA Executive Director Jesse Minkert provided audio description for the visually impaired.

Andy introduced the students to the concepts of his installation. First the students received training in using recording equipment and gathering sounds of the city, as Andy did to create the soundscape for his installation. Then they created text pieces with AVIA’s Jesse Minkert and recorded them in the studio and created their own sound art pieces with Jack Straw engineer Daniel Guenther.
