Artist Page   Composers In Residence

During his 1999 residency at Jack Straw, Brazilian jazz composer/musician/arranger/conductor Jovino Santos Neto composed a new work named “Vagalumes” for New York-based new music collective Musicians Accord, as part of the VirtualConcert project, a national residency project that explores creative uses of the Internet in the composition of music.

The residency focused on the development of the work-in-progress, offering opportunities for the public to attend open rehearsals, a composers’ master class, an improvisation workshop, a web and music demonstration, and a concert, as well as observing targeted outreach events such as composers talks at local colleges, an instrument-building workshop for 6th and 7th grade students, and a workshop on the theme of migration for ESL students. Special programs were planned for school groups, like Thomas Jefferson High School students that attended events and rehearsals to document the project and interview the artists for a video documentary and web content which they presented to other students and posted on their website.

The residency culminated on in a concert at Cornish College of the Arts of 20th century music performed by Musicians Accord: Gretchen Pusch (flute), Ted Mook (cello), Amy Rubin (piano), and William Trigg (percussion). Laura Kaminsky, new Chair of the Music Department at Cornish College, was Artistic Director of Musicians Accord.

The VirtualConcert project was supported nationally by the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund, the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Rockefeller Foundation, with local support from the Seattle Arts Commission, King County Arts Commission, Washington State Arts Commission and the Corporate Council for the Arts. Additional support is provided by the Meet The Composer Fund.
