If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, where does self-worth reside?

UGLY ME is a multi-media sound installation that explores the interplay between appearance and self-worth through fashion photography, distorted selfies, and spoken prose. Twelve original works read by the author play as a backdrop to a series of comical personal images and large-scale typographic collage. Visitors are encouraged to listen, linger, and contribute their own selfies to the investigation.

Gabriela Denise Frank is a literary artist who seeks to transform story into experience. A 2012 Jack Straw Writer, her work bridges the worlds of writing, visual art, place and performance. Thanks to UGLY ME, she has learned not to squirm (as much) in the presence of cameras.

Jack Straw Cultural Center gratefully acknowledges City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, 4Culture King County Lodging Tax Fund, Washington State Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, ArtsFund, and individual contributors for their support of Jack Straw Artist Programs.
