Mikawa
A sound and sculpture installation by Garrett Fisher and Tori Ellison

September 29 - December 8, 2017

Inspired by the haunting world of the ancient Japanese epic Tales of Ise, and the riverbank where a poet meditates on his lost love, Mikawa combines fiberoptic sculpture, sound, technology, and dance in an immersive, contemporary exploration of longing, beauty, and the ephemeral. Choreographer Christy Fisher will perform a dance inspired by the installation at all of the Mikawa events.

Garrett Fisher has composed and staged, with his Fisher Ensemble, more than a dozen live multimedia productions in the US and Europe, and has been hailed as "a groundbreaking hybrid" by the New York Times. Artist Tori Ellison, a MacDowell Colony fellow and mid-Atlantic region NEA finalist, has designed five of Fisher's operas, most recently Monticello Wakes, whose LA world premiere featured her bronze sculpture Self Evident (for Sally Hemings), commissioned by the city of Inglewood, CA.

Jack Straw Cultural Center gratefully acknowledges City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, 4Culture King County Lodging Tax Fund, Washington State Arts Commission, The National Endowment for the Arts, ArtsFund, media sponsor KUOW, and individual contributors for their support of Jack Straw Artist Programs. This exhibition funded in part by a Tech Specific grant from 4Culture..
