Jack Straw and KRAB Archives

Jack Straw maintains an in-house archive of arts and education projects dating back to 1984, including field recordings, artist residencies, installation work, and varied sonic projects.

Delving even deeper into the archive, we hold approximately 4200 open-reel tapes recorded and broadcast on KRAB-FM from 1962 to 1984. While this is not a complete catalog of KRAB's 22 years worth of broadcasting, it represents much of the most unique and engaging programming. This collection includes literary, musical and public affairs programming. Interest in this collection has been consistent for many years, and making this vast archive accessible has been a major concern.

Thanks to a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, we are able to embark on the preliminary assessment, preservation needs, cataloging, and digital duplication of the archives. This work is intended to result in a publicly accessible archive for scholarly research, as well as programming drawn from material within the archives. Special thanks to Matt Love, a graduate student in the University of Washington's Master of Library Science program, who has been working tirelessly on this project for many months.

Our goal is for this material to be accessible, but cataloging and preservation are the necessary prerequisites for a public archive. Please be patient while we take the necessary time to do the job properly!
