ABOUT PODCASTS
A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, which is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers.
The basic requirements for listening to podcasts are a computer, podcasting software and a high-speed Internet connection. To take your podcast with you, any MP3 player, such as an iPod, is also needed.
You can subscribe to a podcast that automatically downloads an MP3 file to your computer; subscribe via syndication feed that alerts you when a new podcasts is posted from a series (this way doesn’t have an automatic download); or search for podcasts on directories and listen to the podcast as streaming audio, which is not downloaded.
To subscribe to a podcast series, such as the Jack Straw Literary Podcasts series, download and install podcasting software onto your computer, (PC or Mac). Though every application is different, there are generally directions to “add” a podcast feed (usually just as simple as copying and pasting the podcast URL into your podcasting application). The next time you “Check for New Podcasts”, an MP3 will be on your computer, and if you are set up for it, on your iPod as well.
To subscribe to the Jack Straw Literary podcast without downloading files, you must have an RSS reader. Users with Google, Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and Hotmail accounts have an RSS reader available to them. All you need to do is paste this RSS feed location to your reader:

Podcast Software: Before you can subscribe to a podcast, you will need to download and install a podcasting application, often referred to as a “podcatcher.” There are various software programs that can be used to download and access podcasts. You can download podcasting software from:
